It all began in August 1992 in my hometown Otterndorf when a friend of mine told me he is going to do the Otterndorfer Volkstriathlon in two weeks. I was drunk and told him I am in. Of course I did regret it the next morning but two weeks later I was toeing the start line for a 300m swim, 20k bike and 5k run.
I was very motivated, started the swim in freestyle but finding myself in a big crowd of swimmers I decided to switch to breaststroke, after 30 meters.
The bike part I did on the road bike from a friends father and in running shoes, at least I had a quick transition to the run this way - with my helmet still on my head for the first 500m
But finally finishing my first triathlon I was hooked, I turned pro in 2000 and this sport has given me so much over the past 30 years that I cannot even describe it in a few words.
I wanted to give back something, that’s why I founded my own triathlon club, Gorillas & Butterflies, a few years ago. We have a very unique international community and Matt and I have the same idea of growing runup into something very special for you.

BEST RACING MEMORIES
Once, towards the end of a race, I threw red bull over my head, thinking it was water. It was really hot and my whole head was super sticky. Wasps then decided to chase me to the finish line. People wondered why I kept running afterwards…
I once won a huge frozen cheesecake for coming in third place in a race. It was summer and the cake was completely melted and destroyed by the time I got home. First prize was an electric toothbrush, which i’m still gutted about not getting.
